Introducing...Ashley Smith

This month, we meet actor Ashley Smith, who’s currently touring Scotland with The Story of the Little Gentleman. Ashley’s first job with Catherine Wheels was in Hansel & Gretel on stage at the New Victory Theater, New York in 2009!

How long have you been at Catherine Wheels?
This is my 6th time working for the company and the 5th production I have done.

What does your job involve?
As an actor my job involves storytelling, creating, dancing, clowning, singing, playing, general nonsense and some heavy lifting!

What has been a Catherine Wheels highlight for you?
I toured America in 2015 with Lifeboat and passed through 36 states (I think) over 3 1/2 months as well as celebrating a special birthday there, it was one of, if not the best, times of my life!

What’s your favourite thing about your job?
I love performing for family audiences, they are the most fun, truthful and appreciative.

What’s the best thing about working in theatre?
The diversity of work I get to be a part of, now I’m a dog, yesterday I was a pirate, tomorrow I might be a pilot, its ever-changing ever-challenging.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to work as an actor?
Go to the theatre!! The best thing you can do is see as many things as possible
1) so you know what work you enjoy and want to make
2) so you meet all the people who make it.

Can you tell us a Catherine Wheels secret?
There was an additional cast member touring with us in America, her name was Gloria and she always took prime spot in the van!

And finally, how would you describe Catherine Wheels in three words?
Energetic, inspiring and silly!
