Media Release: Make Space 2021 announced

_
Following the success of Catherine Wheels’ inaugural Make Space fund for artists in 2020, the company have announced a new call out today, reaching out to artists and practitioners from any creative background to research and develop new ideas of new work for children.

The Make Space fund invites applicants from across Scotland and across disciplines who are interested in making work for young people, to investigate new ways of creating and presenting children’s theatre. The funding will support two projects with resources to research and develop new ideas over a 6 month period, supported by the Catherine Wheels’ team.

Through Make Space, Catherine Wheels wants to question the traditional idea of children’s theatre and uncover new ways of working. The company wants applicants to address issues including carbon-neutral touring, creating work for audiences in different ways, and presenting work in flexible spaces. A large emphasis will also be placed on engaging local communities. Catherine Wheels wants children to hear different stories and ideas, from a variety of voices and perspectives, that reflect all of Scotland. At least one of the artists supported by the Make Space fund will come from an under-represented group. Artists based in Catherine Wheels’ home region of East Lothian are also strongly encouraged.

Make Space will provide funds of up to £5,000 per project. The fund can be used to pay for the applicant’s own time, working with others, materials and associated costs of delivering their idea. Deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 19 April and successful projects will be announced on Tuesday 11 May.

Gill Robertson, Artistic Director of Catherine Wheels comments:

“We were delighted by the amazing projects created by the Make Space artists in 2020. At a time when it was nearly impossible to interact with audiences, the artists managed to reach families and school children, and shared innovative and inspiring work which will have a life beyond 2020. We are looking forward to working with new Make Space artists in 2021 and supporting them in developing work for young audiences.”
