Us
Catherine Wheels is a Scottish children’s theatre company which was formed in 1999 by the director Gill Robertson. The first production Martha, has performed in theatres throughout the UK, Ireland and North America, taking in Broadway on the way. In 2008 Martha was part of the Singapore International Children's Festival, the Tasmanian Ten Days on the Island Festival and won the award for Best Production at the Shanghai International Children’s Festival.
Lifeboat (2002), which won the Barclays Stage Award for Best Show for Children and Young People, has been part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the New Zealand International Arts Festival in 2007, was on New York's Broadway as well as being the first production by a Scottish Children’s Theatre Company at the Sydney Opera House.
These successes, along with Something Wicked This Way Comes (with National Theatre of Scotland), Hansel & Gretel, Cyrano, Snow Baby, The Lion of Kabul, Kappa, The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk and The Book of Beasts have established Catherine Wheels as a leading producer of theatre for children and young people.
Supported by the Scottish Arts Council, the company is based at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh, just outside Edinburgh where East Lothian Council provide office and rehearsal space, and a starting point for tours.

Director - Gill Robertson
Gill Robertson is the founder and artistic director of Catherine Wheels Theatre Company. She has worked as a director, actor and drama mentor throughout Scotland. Her credits as a director include: Martha, Lifeboat, Cyrano, A Town Called Elsewhere, Kappa, The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk and Hansel & Gretel (Catherine Wheels); The Purple Potting Shed (Topiary Dance); Cinderella and Spend a Penny (Shona Reppe Puppets); Chasing Angels (Complete Productions); Giant Steps and Bill’s New Frock (Visible Fictions) and The Wizard of Oz (Lyceum Theatre). As a performer: Martha, Red and Frankenstein, The Lion of Kabul and most recently The Book of Beasts (Catherine Wheels); Cinderella and A Midsummer’s Night Dream (Brunton Theatre); and The Snow Baby (Catherine Wheels/macrobert co-production) In 2006 she directed Home: East Lothian for National Theatre of Scotland, which won best show for children & young people at the 2006 CATS awards.
Producer - Paul Fitzpatrick
Paul Fitzpatrick joined Catherine Wheels in 2002 and has produced A Town Called Elsewhere, Cinderella’s Sisters, Cyrano, Hansel & Gretel, The Lion of Kabul, Snow Baby and The Story of the Little Gentleman. He was the founder of Complete Productions (1996) producing: Cut to the Chase, The Chrysalids (David Harrower), Chasing Angels (Rhiannon Tise), Waiting Room (Isabel Wright) and The Colourbox (devised). Paul has a BA in Dramatic Studies (RSAMD and was awarded an MPhil in Dramaturgy with distinction from the University of Glasgow (2000). He is currently a Fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme.
